Operation Firm Handshake Provides Support for Veterans and Families

The 10th annual Operation Firm Handshake veterans and families event took place on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Coal City Area Club. Over 1,200 people attended this meaningful event organized by Max Valdez. The event featured various forms of entertainment, including DJs, a fly-over, a military vehicle and car show, and a pig roast. Additionally, attendees enjoyed delicious food such as hot dogs, hamburgers, and a corn boil. Santa Claus even made a special appearance and brought presents for all the children.

One of the most significant aspects of Operation Firm Handshake is that it is completely free of charge for veterans and their families. This event has been made possible through the support of the St. Juvin Post 1336 VFW, local merchants, and generous private donations. It would not have been possible without the active participation and dedication of St. Juvin VFW members, including Commander James “Hoppy” Phillips, Jim Richards, Keith Roseland, Irv DeWald, Ron Berta, Al Diaz, Jim Muntefering, and Randy Brown, all of whom were present at the event.

Operation Firm Handshake aims to provide a supportive and enjoyable experience for veterans and their families. It allows them to come together in a welcoming environment and enjoy the entertainment and camaraderie. This event not only recognizes the sacrifices made by veterans but also serves as a platform for the community to show their gratitude and honor their service.

Overall, Operation Firm Handshake is a heartwarming event that demonstrates the community’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families. It serves as a reminder of the importance of coming together to show appreciation and provide assistance to those who have selflessly served our country.
