The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) region is currently facing a multitude of challenges that are putting its energy systems at risk. The COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing geopolitical crises, supply chain disruptions, and the impacts of climate change have all highlighted the vulnerability of the UNECE energy systems. In response to these challenges, member States are now prioritizing the development of resilient energy systems to ensure their energy security and meet their goals under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Committee on Sustainable Energy, during its thirty-first session in September 2022, agreed to establish the UNECE Platform on Resilient Energy Systems. This platform aims to facilitate inclusive dialogue and provide support to member States as they navigate the complex task of building resilient energy systems. It will coordinate efforts, disseminate information, offer guidance, training, and technical assistance to member States.
To further enhance the effectiveness of the platform, expert groups within the Committee have put forth a set of recommendations for member States to consider. These recommendations focus on key areas such as cleaner electricity systems, coal mine methane and just transition, energy efficiency, gas, renewable energy, and resource management. By implementing these recommendations, member States can address both their immediate energy and economic needs, while also laying the groundwork for a sustainable and resilient energy future.
Building resilient energy systems is a crucial step towards ensuring energy security and sustainability in the UNECE region. As member States navigate these unprecedented challenges, the establishment of the UNECE Platform on Resilient Energy Systems and the adoption of the recommendations put forth by expert groups provide a solid foundation for addressing these challenges and working towards a more resilient and sustainable future.
