The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) region is currently facing a myriad of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical crises, supply chain disruptions, and climate change impacts. These challenges have exposed the vulnerabilities of the region’s energy systems and have prompted member States to prioritize the building of more resilient energy systems.
During the thirty-first session of the Committee on Sustainable Energy in September 2022, member States of the UNECE agreed to focus on energy resilience and established the UNECE Platform on Resilient Energy Systems. This platform aims to facilitate inclusive dialogue and provide member States with information, guidance, training, or technical assistance to support the development of resilient energy systems.
Under the Committee, various expert groups have put forward recommendations to help member States in their efforts to build resilient energy systems. These recommendations encompass areas such as cleaner electricity systems, coal mine methane and just transition, energy efficiency, gas, renewable energy, and resource management.
The implementation of these recommendations not only aids member States in meeting their immediate energy and economic needs but also aligns with their long-term goals of sustainable development outlined in the 2030 Agenda and the Paris agreement.
By focusing on cleaner electricity systems, member States can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and transition towards renewable energy sources. Energy efficiency measures can help optimize energy usage, reduce waste, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. The exploration and utilization of coal mine methane can contribute to both energy security and environmental sustainability. Additionally, the adoption of renewable energy can further diversify energy sources and promote carbon neutrality.
Building resilient energy systems in the UNECE region is crucial for ensuring energy security, economic stability, and environmental sustainability. The UNECE Platform on Resilient Energy Systems and the recommendations put forth by the expert groups serve as valuable resources for member States as they navigate these complex challenges.
