Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, and Mazda Cars Top List of Safest Vehicles

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), cars made by Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, and Mazda have been ranked as the safest vehicles on the road. The annual list of top-rated vehicles has grown, with more additions since its release in February 2023. However, the list is relatively shorter compared to previous years due to the tougher tests being conducted.

For the 2023 model year, there are now 51 cars that qualify for the highest rating, known as the Top Safety Pick+ award. Additionally, another 25 cars qualify for the Top Safety Pick award. This is a decrease from 101 vehicles last year and 90 vehicles in 2021. The reason for the drop in numbers is primarily attributed to the implementation of a tougher side-impact crash test, a more detailed evaluation of automatic emergency braking, and new headlight requirements.

The introduction of the new headlight requirement has posed a challenge for many models, leading to their exclusion from the list. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety believes that as car manufacturers respond to these tougher tests, more models will be able to meet the requirements for top safety status.

To achieve the Top Safety Pick+ award, vehicles must perform well on the new side-crash test, which simulates a higher-speed impact with a larger vehicle. They must also have automatic emergency braking systems that are effective in preventing collisions with pedestrians at night, as well as headlights that provide adequate illumination on curves and straightaways.

Some of the vehicles that have received the Top Safety Pick+ award include the Acura Integra, Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, Subaru Outback, Mercedes-Benz C Class, and many more. These vehicles have demonstrated excellent performance in crash tests and safety evaluations, making them top choices for consumers concerned about safety.

It is important for car manufacturers to continuously improve the safety features of their vehicles, as the standards set by organizations like the IIHS continue to become more stringent. By designing vehicles that can pass these tests, car manufacturers can ensure that their products provide the highest level of safety for drivers and passengers alike.
