The construction of the offshore wind farm near the coast of Egmond aan Zee (the Netherlands) has started. The consortium NoordzeeWind, a joint venture between Dutch utility company NUON and international oil company Shell, is the operator of the first Dutch offshore wind project. Upon completion of the first wind turbines in mid-June, a group of journalists and photographers was invited to visit the wind farm under construction. This review contains some of the pictures that were taken during this visit.
Key features of the wind farm
EnergyPortal recently published the press release by NoordzeeWind to publicly announce the construction. The most important characteristics of the wind park are summarized below.
- Number of wind turbines: 36
- Turbine manufacturer: Vestas (DK)
- Construction company: Ballast Nedam (NL)
- Capacity: 108 MW
- Ready: end 2006
- Production: electricity to supply approximately 100,000 Dutch households
- Investment: 200 million euro
The wind farm is one of the first to be completed out of an enormous list of planned offshore projects in the North Sea. It remains questionable whether all proposed projects will finally enter into completion. The 108 MW of NoordzeeWind constitute a useful contribution towards meeting the Dutch target of 9% green power in 2010, but is not the single largest offshore wind farm in the European Union.
