Solar power will be massive and the world is not prepared, warned Kees van der Leun speaking from the Econcern Sustainable Energy Event, running alongside the COP14 in Poznan. Van der Leun, board member of Econcern, the world-leading sustainable energy provider said that in only a few years the growth of solar energy will hit grid barriers and legislative issues. Based on his company's experience and market analysis, he expects newly installed solar power to beat other energy sources within ten years. Solar energy volume has grown at an annual rate of 40 to 50% over the last ten years, while system prices are decreasing by an average of 7 - 10 % per year due to technological innovation and increased production capacity.

He said: "All sustainable energy sources will continue to develop and are needed in order to complete our mission, a sustainable energy supply for everyone. However, the predictions for solar are much too conservative. The updated World Energy Outlook, recently presented by the International Energy Agency, underestimates the growth of solar by far. Their market estimate for 2020 will be achieved next year. At the household level, solar power is already competing with power from the grid in Southern Italy and the South West of the US. This so called "grid parity" will progress into higher latitudes, reaching Scandinavia by 2020. By that time, solar will compete even with conventional large-scale power plants, starting again in the sunniest regions."

Econcern's predictions are based on experience along the entire supply chain of solar energy solutions. From sourcing base materials to production, planning and placing systems, Econcern has installed 35 MW this year and expects to install another 75MW in 2009. Van der Leun urges industry and governments to adapt the grid to solar. He warned: "If no extra measures are taken regarding grid access and regulation then already by 2009 the possible growth in the solar power industry will be constrained. We urgently call for an action plan. Paperwork and the physical grid connection are bottlenecks already. It is urgent to solve these issues, because growth in solar energy is much faster than many expect."
