Denmark has entered a collaboration agreement with Mexico on energy policy, including oil extraction, biofuels and energy efficiency. The Danish Minister for Climate and Energy, Lykke Friis, and the Mexican Minister for Energy, Georgina Kessel, signed the agreement in July in Mexico. The news is reported in a press release from the Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy. "Denmark and Mexico have already started a close joint effort concerning international climate policy. Denmark is head of the UN climate negotiations until we hand over the baton to Mexico in November. Since energy policy is the toolbox of climate policy, it is naturally obvious that we now take a step further and start a specific collaboration concerning energy efficiency especially," says Lykke Friis.

Mexico is the world's 7th largest oil producer and one of the big players on the international energy market. The agreement between Mexico and Denmark contains four points where the two countries will enter close collaboration: electricity and renewable energy, energy efficiency, oil and gas, and biofuels. The plan is to increase exchange of knowledge and hold a number of conferences.

"At the energy summit that has just been held in Washington, energy efficiency was proclaimed as the sleeping giant of climate policy. Danish [energy technology] companies are in a leading position internationally, and so Denmark is a particularly interesting collaboration partner for Mexico, which has not yet picked the low-hanging fruit - for the benefit of the bottom line and the climate," says Lykke Friis.

The Danish minister also discussed the UN climate negotiations with Mexico's Minister for the Environment, Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada, prior to COP16 being held in Cancun in Mexico from 29 November to 10 December 2010.
