The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today approved two renewable energy contracts for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), furthering the state's progress towards its 2010 and 2020 renewable energy goals.

The list below provides a brief explanation of the projects:

  • Generating Facility: Hatchet Ridge; High Plains Solar Farms
  • Type: New - Wind; New - Solar PV
  • Term Years: 15 years; 25, plus a 3 year phase-in period
  • MW Capacity: 78-103 MW; 210 MW
  • Annual Deliveries: 227-303 GWh; 550 GWh
  • Online Date: 12/31/2009; 12/31/2012 (Phasing in 1/1/2010 to 12/31/2012)
  • Project Location: Burney, Shasta County; Carrizo Plain, San Luis Obispo County

Through its agreement with Hatchet Ridge, PG&E will receive deliveries equal to approximately 227-303 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy per year, depending on the final capacity contracted by PG&E. Generation at the new wind facility, which will be located in Shasta County, Calif., is expected to begin at the end of 2009, thus contributing to PG&E's 2010 Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) goal.

Through its agreement with High Plains Solar Farms, PG&E will receive deliveries equal to approximately 550 GWh of energy per year. The project, which is owned by SunPower, Inc., will generate electricity using monocrystalline silicon solar photovoltaic panels and will be located in San Luis Obispo County, Calif.

The CPUC's RPS Program requires Investor Owned Utilities, Energy Service Providers, and Community Choice Aggregators operating in California to obtain 20 percent of their retail sales from renewable energy sources by 2010. On November 17, 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger signed an Executive Order (S-14-08), which established a 33 percent by 2020 RPS goal.
