The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) notes with great sadness the passing of Stanford University climate scientist Stephen H. Schneider, who died yesterday at the age of 65. Below is a statement by Peter Frumhoff, UCS director of science and policy. "We have lost a world-class scientist and a great man. Steve had a tireless commitment to understanding and communicating the risks of climate change, a gift for collaborating across diverse disciplines, and an unflinching courage of conviction in forcefully speaking out against misrepresentations of climate science and attacks on scientists. I had the privilege of collaborating with Steve on a number of initiatives , including a groundbreaking study of the impacts of climate change on California. He was a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to all who seek to bring unvarnished science to bear on sustaining our planet." For more on Schneider, read a rich and insightful eulogy by Ben Santer, a climate researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Labs.
