Increasing demand for biofuels and consequent higher prices make all forms of biomass for energy production interesting to industry. But raw biomass from forests, fields, sawmills and the food industry often has a low combustion value, either because it is wet or it takes up a lot of space. To address the problem, the Danish Technological Institute and Andritz Feed & Biofuel have set up a test plant in Kolding, Jutland, to conduct research into optimisation of equipment for pre-treatment of biomass for energy production. The news is reported in the Danish Energy Association's newspaper Nyhedsbladet Dansk Energi. "We know there is a major market for testing and development of biomass-upgrading targeted at companies that buy and pre-treat biomass," says Niels Peter Nielsen at the Centre for Renewable Energy, the Danish Technological Institute.

The institute will analyse how various forms of biomass can be upgraded to fuels which have a low water content, and are easy to store and handle. "To meet the demand we have to include new types of biomass. Since they often have other properties than conventional types of biomass, we must analyse precisely how they behave during the combustion process. After that we can develop better methods to handle them," says Nielsen. Forms of feedstock that will be tested include: straw, elephant grass and energy willow, as well as residual products from ethanol and biogas production.
