The institute will analyse how various forms of biomass can be upgraded to fuels which have a low water content, and are easy to store and handle. "To meet the demand we have to include new types of biomass. Since they often have other properties than conventional types of biomass, we must analyse precisely how they behave during the combustion process. After that we can develop better methods to handle them," says Nielsen. Forms of feedstock that will be tested include: straw, elephant grass and energy willow, as well as residual products from ethanol and biogas production.
