From now until the end of the year, we will meet our ecological demand by depleting resource stocks and accumulating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Global Footprint Network calculates nature's supply in the form of biocapacity, the amount of resources the planet regenerates each year, and compares that to human demand: the amount it takes to produce all the living resources we consume and absorb our carbon dioxide emissions. Its data reveal that, as of August 21, humanity will have demanded all the ecological services - from filtering CO2 to producing the raw materials for food - that nature can provide this year.
From now until the end of the year, we will meet our ecological demand by depleting resource stocks and accumulating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
"If you spent your entire annual income in nine months, you would probably be extremely concerned," said Global Footprint Network President Mathis Wackernagel. "The situation is no less dire when it comes to our ecological budget. Climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, water and food shortages -- these are all clear signs that we can no longer finance our consumption on credit. Nature is foreclosing."

NXP Semiconductors N.V. (Nasdaq: NXPI) announced today the publication of its Sustainability Report for 2009. The report, "High Performance Mixed Signal: Innovations for a better tomorrow," explains how NXP products are helping to enable society as a whole to reduce energy consumption; describes the performance of NXP itself with regard to sustainability; and outlines how the company is working toward sustainable growth in the future.
Highlights of NXP's sustainability performance in 2009 include:
Minister Huizinga of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM) is urging a long-term, robust energy policy to serve as a guideline for a sustainable energy supply by 2050. The policy is to be set out in an energy plan, including a ‘roadmap' similar to that used in the Delta programme. The minister made the announcement today in The Hague, at a symposium for sustainable solutions and innovation organised by the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), the Dutch Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MKB-Nederland) and the Dutch Federation of Agriculture and Horticulture (LTO Nederland). ‘If what we want is to provide future generations in the Netherlands with a secure energy supply in a climate-proof world, what we need is an energy plan with a roadmap leading to a sustainable energy supply by 2050. Such a plan will give investors and businesses the clarity that they need. They need to know where they stand - after all, innovation and entrepreneurship are essential in facing this future challenge. It is up to the national government to facilitate the process of innovation and investment, where necessary at an international level, by creating preconditions that are supported by solid, long-term energy policy.'

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan today announced new contracting efforts that will enhance livability and sustainability initiatives and improve competition for federal highway projects. The new process removes conflicting HUD and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) contracting requirements, giving state and local agencies more flexibility. In addition, it promotes livable and sustainable communities, places where transportation, housing and commercial development investments have been coordinated so that people have access to adequate, affordable and environmentally sustainable travel options near their homes, by delivering projects sooner and at reduced costs. The new process does not allow transportation dollars to be used for housing related improvements. "We are committed to innovation, removing barriers to employment, improving livability and improving government service to the American people," said Secretary LaHood. "Bringing these two programs together gives Americans more for their tax dollar."
In the midst of the intractable crisis caused by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, it is time to stop investing in a broken energy economy and seize the opportunity to invest in a sustainable energy future, according to the environmental group Greenpeace. The way forward is illustrated in "Energy [R]evolution: A Sustainable USA Energy Outlook," one of the most comprehensive plans for future production and distribution of sustainable energy systems launched today by Greenpeace and the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC). The report provides a detailed practical blueprint for cutting carbon emissions while achieving economic growth by replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy and energy efficiency. This phase-out of fossil fuels offers substantial benefits such as energy security, independence from world market fuel prices, and reduction in pollution-related illnesses.
