28 new projects focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency have collectively received DKK 286 million in support funding from the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme, writes the Danish Energy Authority in a news release. The largest slice of the funding cake has been given to projects in the fuel cell and biomass areas: six project s in both sectors have received DKK 90 million. Other renewable energy areas receiving support include projects in wind, solar, oil and gas. Support funding for biomass projects has been divided between pre-market development and demonstration for both smaller-scale and large-scale technologies where Denmark has a leading international position. The technologies cover a broad spectrum of both wet and dry biomass applications for the production of heat, electricity and fuels for transport.

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) today issued the following statement from Denise Bode, AWEA CEO, on the news release issued by Senator Brownback on a national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES): "Senator Brownback's press release is further demonstration of the bipartisan support that exists for the national Renewable Electricity Standard (RES). Senator Brownback has experience in Kansas with the economic development benefits of renewable energy and has promoted renewable energy policy in the Senate, providing a key vote in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee for the energy bill last year. We believe an RES not only has support for passage, but will strengthen the energy bill's chances as well."
Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced a conditional commitment to provide a partial guarantee for a $98.5 million loan by John Hancock Financial Services to the Nevada Geothermal Power Company (NGP) for a 49.5 megawatt geothermal project in Humboldt County in northwestern Nevada. The NGP Blue Mountain ("Blue Mountain") project consists of a geothermal well field, fluid collection and injection systems that enable energy to be extracted from rock and fluid below the Earth's surface, and a power plant that converts geothermal energy into electricity. The project has a 20-year power purchase agreement to sell electricity and renewable energy credits to Nevada Power Company. "The United States leads the world in geothermal electricity production with just over 3,000 megawatts of installed capacity," said Secretary Chu. "Our support of the Blue Mountain project demonstrates our continued commitment to realize the potential in geothermal so that we can achieve our nation's clean energy goals."
Greenpeace endorsed legislation (HR 5248) introduced in the House of Representatives by Representatives Pallone, Castor and Garamendi, which seeks to prohibit further leasing of any area of the outer Continental shelf for the exploration, development, or production of oil, gas, or any other mineral. "It is clear that offshore drilling presents a clear and present danger to the environment, to the public, and to our economy," said Phil Radford, Greenpeace Executive Director. As we watch this terrible disaster unfold in the Gulf, it becomes ever more clear that we have to kick America's addiction to all oil and commit to a future based on clean and renewable energy and efficiency technologies. We thank Representatives Pallone, Castor and Garamendi for their vision in introducing this bill and look forward to working with them to pass this legislation in the House. Greenpeace is pledging to support anti-drilling legislation in the House and Senate and is calling for Congress to develop new climate legislation which commits the U.S. to ambitious reductions in greenhouse gas pollution and turns the country away from its addiction to oil."Source: Greenpeace USA
Dutch Minister Van Middelkoop of Housing, Communities and Integration (VROM) has designated thirteen new-build projects as pilots to gain experience of energy-efficient construction. A total of fortyseven municipal authorities had applied for projects in their area to participate in the scheme. An independent committee consisting of project developers, builders, housing corporations, and municipal and provincial authorities proposed a list of projects to the Minister. In making its selection the committee considered issues such as the extent to which the knowledge and experience acquired could be used in other new-build projects elsewhere in the Netherlands. Minister Van Middelkoop will give the thirteen ‘Areas of Excellence' [Excellente Gebieden] a maximum of €300,000 per project. This subsidy is intended to cover the additional process and supervision costs involved in carrying out the project. The underlying aim of the Areas of Excellence Scheme is to gain experience on a larger scale with highly energy-efficient, innovative new build in anticipation of the tightening up of the EPC (Energy Performance Coefficient) requirements in 2011 and 2015. The EPC standard gives an insight into a building's energy performance.
