Greener, transparent government took a step forward today with two ministries displaying their energy use in real-time, on-line, for the first time. The Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Home Office will be followed by all central government HQs in the coming months, making good on a promise made by Prime Minister David Cameron only three weeks ago. Real-time on-line energy display is part of the Government's commitment to cut carbon emissions from central government by 10% in the next year. From today, the energy used to heat and light DECC and the Home Office will be persistently updated on-line in units of energy, cost and carbon.
Carbon emissions from central government will be cut by 10% in the next 12 months, Prime Minister David Cameron announced today. This is the most ambitious commitment on UK Government emissions ever made - and will provide strong and decisive leadership on green issues helping to deliver better value for money and make a contribution to reducing the record deficit. Government department headquarters will also publish online in real time their energy use so that the public can hold ministers and civil servants to account for their carbon footprint. A government steering group will be established to ensure the delivery of this emissions target. The steering group will be chaired by the Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne, and comprise representatives from key departments and the private sector. The Prime Minister will write to all colleagues to reaffirm this shared commitment and invite them to bring forward their plans to help meet this common target.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is recognizing eight companies for achieving significant goals to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the agency's Climate Leaders program. Twenty-seven companies are also being commended for announcing aggressive GHG reduction goals. Combined, the Climate Leaders companies are reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year. "EPA's Climate Leaders are sending a clear message that the choice between our economy and our environment is a false choice," said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. "They're doing their part in the fight against climate change and giving consumers the power to support environmentally responsible choices. That leads to a better bottom line and a brighter future for everyone." Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., Bank of America Corp., Coors Brewing Company, Eastman Kodak Company, First Environment, Inc., Gap Inc., Roche Group U.S., and Shaklee Corp. have achieved long-term GHG reduction goals, and three of these companies have also made new commitments to further reduce their emissions.
