Greenpeace response to Sinar Mas "verification exercise"

9027_sinar_mas_rainforest_deforestation_indonesia"The Sinar Mas audit largely confirms Greenpeace findings. It shows that Sinar Mas has been clearing forests and peat lands. Also it confirms that the company has been operating without the necessary permits and has been clearing deep peat illegally," said Bustar Maitar, Greenpeace Southeast Asia Forest Team Leader. "The Sinar Mas spin is a poor attempt at brand protection that does nothing to challenge Greenpeace's findings. We've repeatedly shown that Sinar Mas says one thing and does another. They destroy peatland and call it water management. They clear rainforests and say that they're developing degraded land," he added. "But instead of acting on our findings, which conclusively prove Sinar Mas destroys rainforests and peatlands, they're trying to greenwash their image," added Maitar said. Between 2007 and July 2010 (1), Greenpeace International released a series of reports exposing the impact of the Sinar Mas Group's pulp, paper and oil palm divisions on climate, forests, peatlands and tiger and orangutan habitats. 8979_sinar_mas_rainforest_destruction_indonesia_biofuelsA new Greenpeace investigation into the operations of Sinar Mas, one the most notorious destroyers of Indonesia's rainforests, reveals how it is continuing to break its own environmental commitments on protecting forests and peatland. Publishing new photographic evidence, aerial monitoring and field analysis, Greenpeace International today details how the Sinar Mas group continues to clear rainforest containing priceless biodiversity - such as orang-utan habitat - and carbon-rich peatlands, despite public promises it has made to clean up its act. The revelations also highlight Sinar Mas' ambitions to expand its pulp and palm oil empire into millions more hectares across Indonesia, including large tracts of rainforest and peatland in the province of Papua. These ambitions are outlined in confidential Sinar Mas documents obtained by Greenpeace. Last week, the head of Sinar Mas' palm oil division confirmed the company's intentions to expand its empire by an additional 1 million hectares. EU restricts the use of palm oil for biofuels

8799_eu_palm_oil_biofuelsThe Commission decided today to encourage industry, governments and NGOs to set up certification schemes for all types of biofuels, including those imported into the EU. It laid down what the schemes must do to be recognised by the Commission. This will help implement the EU's requirements that biofuels must deliver substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and should not come from forests, wetlands and nature protection areas. The rules for certification schemes are part of a set of guidelines explaining how the Renewable Energy Directive, coming into effect in December 2010, should be implemented. Günther Oettinger, Commissioner responsible for Energy, said: "In the years to come, biofuels are the main alternative to petrol and diesel used in transport, which produces more than 20% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union. We have to ensure that the biofuels used are also sustainable. Our certification scheme is the most stringent in the world and will make sure that our biofuels meet the highest environmental standards. It will have positive effects also on other regions as it covers imported biofuels." EU  European Union  biodiesel  biofuels  palm oil

Palm oil giant Sinar Mas continues to break environmental commitments

8647_sinar_mas_palm_oil_deforestationAs shareholders arrived at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Sinar Mas palm oil subsidiary Golden Agri Resources (GAR), Greenpeace released new evidence showing the company is breaking its promise to stop destroying Indonesia's rainforests. Rapid deforestation for palm oil plantation expansion in Indonesia is pushing species like endangered orangutans to the brink of extinction. The destruction of rainforests has also made Indonesia the world's largest greenhouse gas polluter after China and the United States. "Our evidence shows Sinar Mas continues to mislead shareholders and customers about its environmental practices. Sinar Mas wants us to believe empty promises while it continues trashing rainforests and orangutan habitat. We will continue to press Sinar Mas' customers to stop all business with the company until it cleans up its act," said Rolf Skar, Greenpeace senior forest campaigner. Al Gore warns against negative effects of biofuels

1580_gore_biofuels_deforestationFormer US Vice President Al Gore spoke in Argentina about the pros and cons of biofuels as a means to combat global climate change. Gore was talking to representatives of the biofuel industry in a Buenos Aires hotel. He warned that the drive to produce alternative fuels must not create new forms of environmental damage. Recently, it has become more clear that in many cases biodiesel is produced in an unsustainable way. Especially in Indonesia and Malaysia, oil palm plantations have caused massive deforestation. The government is encouraging more forest clearing to meet the growing demand for palm oil.

Speaking in Argentina yesterday, Gore, whose global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth won an Academy Award this year, said: "Every potential solution much be handled carefully and the danger with biofuels is that extremely valuable forests will be destroyed unnecessarily. "Another danger is that, if it is not pursued carefully, it will drive food prices up." US President George Bush has announced that he intends to reduce gasoline consumption by 20% in 2017. This would require 35 billion gallons of alternative fuels to replace fossil fuels. Al Gore  biofuels  deforestation  palm oil
