8926_calfifornia_hybrid_electric_gas_bus_truckThe California Energy Commission approved 11 awards that leverage almost $20 million in state funding with $9.3 million in federal stimulus money and $39 million in private funds. These projects will demonstrate the possibilities for cutting-edge natural gas-powered, hybrid, and electric trucks and buses to reduce petroleum use, cut pollution and provide jobs. "California's investment in alternative fuels and technology will leverage nearly two-and-a-half times as much money for an important part of our transportation sector," said Energy Commissioner Anthony Eggert. "While electric and hybrid cars get much of the media attention, advances in large, heavy-duty trucks and buses can replace millions of gallons of petroleum each year." 8856_solimpeks_hybrid_solar_collectorThere's an exciting new hybrid solar collector that combines photovoltaic (PV) power generation with solar water heating. The idea of combining PV and solar-thermal isn't new, but some companies have taken the idea to a new level of sophistication with their hybrid solar collector. This idea came from the Task 35, it's a duty from IEA (International Energy Agency) This idea contains a description and overview of the task and result from the work.

The objectives of this ‘'Task 35'' are to catalyst the development and market introduction of high quality and commercial competitive PV-T hybrid systems and to increase general understanding and contribute to internationally accepted standards on performance, testing, monitoring and commercial characteristics of PV-T hybrid Systems in the building sector. The heart in a PV-T hybrid system is a PhotoVoltaic/Thermal module, or PV-T module which is a combination of photovoltaic cells with a solar thermal collector, forming one device that converts solar radiation into electricity and heat simultaneously.

8855_solimpeks_hybrid_kitThe Volther hybrid solar collector, which produces electricity and hot water simultaneously. Solimpeks Corp., a solar company based in Karatay, Turkey, has released the Volther hybrid solar collector, which produces electricity and hot water simultaneously. The product hybrid modules produced by Solimpeks Corp. allow extra module heat to be absorbed to produce hot water, thus optimizing efficiency, the company says. Historically, the main drawback of many conventional photovoltaic systems has been the high initial cost as well as the limited amount of electrical output when compared to the solar input. This Volther hybrid solar collector system allows excess heat to be recaptured and boosts the system's return on investment, according to Solimpeks Corp.

8637_united_states_hybrid_fleetPresident Obama announced today that the Federal Government will lead by example in replacing older cars in the federal fleet with fuel efficient hybrids and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, reducing our dependence on foreign oil as well as cutting carbon dioxide and other pollution. The U.S. General Services Administration will double the federal hybrid fleet this year and has committed to purchasing approximately 100 plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2011. These steps are part of a broad effort to implement the Executive Order signed by President Obama in October which calls on agencies to cut the federal government's fleet petroleum use by 30 percent by 2020, among other goals. 7177_fuel_cell_school_busAs part of the Department of Energy's commitment to advancing the next generation of electric vehicles in the United States, Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced the selection of a new demonstration and testing project to develop a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) school bus to be used in fleets across the country. Navistar Corporation (Fort Wayne, IN) has been selected by the Department of Energy (DOE) for negotiation of a cost-shared award of up to $10 million to develop, test, and deploy an electric hybrid school bus. PHEVs will play an important role in achieving America's energy independence by reducing petroleum use and greenhouse gas emissions. Today's announcement will also help meet President Obama's goal of putting one million plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road by 2015.

"These projects will help move technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace by improving their durability, reducing their costs, and validating their performance in real-world settings," said Secretary Chu. "By investing in the vehicles of the future, we will create new jobs while reducing our dependence on foreign oil and improving our environment."
