In 2010 the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) are organising wind events around the world for both the public and the media to come and find out more about wind energy. Already some 38 organisations have signed up to take part, with others sure to join them. "Imagine being able to harness the power of nature in a sustainable way to create abundant clean energy, tackle climate change, create jobs and end our dangerous dependence on polluting fossil fuels", said Steve Sawyer, Secretary General of GWEC. "It's not a dream, it's wind energy - and it definitely deserves a special day." Last year over 300 Global Wind Day events were held in 35 countries from China to the Czech Republic to Canada.
The hundreds of events being organised for the Global Wind Day on 15 June can be seen on a new, interactive Google map, which shows all the activities on offer at any location at the click of a mouse. Wind farm guided tours, conferences, exhibitions, workshops, information days, openings of new wind farms, regattas, marathons, theatrical shows are all on offer...and much more besides! One of the first Wind Day activities drew to a close this morning with the announcement of the two winners of the Global Wind Day photo contest. David Depasse from Belgium's photo was the favourite of the expert panel, made up of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), the photo contest organisers and their partners, National Geographic and Samsung. Keith Flamée from the UK's picture, on the other hand, won the public vote.
