8971_senator_inhofe_cooling_trendIn response to a question during an ABC News / Washington Post interview today about recent heat waves and record temperatures, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said, "I don't think that anyone disagrees with the fact that we actually are in a cold period that started about nine years ago." Cold period? Not quite. "In fact, climate scientists disagree with Senator Inhofe's statement," said Brenda Ekwurzel, a climate scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). According to NASA, the past 10 year average was the hottest on record, Ekwurzel pointed out. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, meanwhile, concluded that the first six months of this year are the hottest on record globally. Scientists project that 2010 is on track to be the hottest year on record, unless Pacific ocean conditions drive down surface temperatures. Inhofe  Senator  climate change  cooling

8810_nuon_amsterdam_cooling_stationToday Nuon opened a new sustainable cooling station in the "Amsterdam Zuidoost" district, which makes use of the cold water in the nearby Ouderkerkerplas Lake. Thanks to the cooling station, connected offices and buildings can now replace their traditional cooling equipment with this natural energy source, leading to a CO2 reduction of up to 75%. After the ‘Amsterdam Zuidas' business district, Amsterdam Zuidoost is now the second district in the Netherlands to embrace this environmentally-friendly form of cooling. Nuon is the first energy company in the Netherlands to use this technology to provide buildings with comfortable cooling energy. Amsterdam  Netherlands  cooling  technology

EPA offers cooling tips for every budget this summer

8741_cooling_tips_summerThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program offers low to no-cost energy-efficient cooling tips to beat the heat. A typical household spends almost 20 percent of its utility bill on cooling, and by taking steps this summer to improve energy efficiency, you can save energy, save money and help fight climate change. Try these simple tips to start saving today:

No-Cost

· Program your thermostat to work around your family's summer schedule-set it a few degrees higher (such as 78 degrees) when no one is home, so your cooling system isn't cooling an empty house. With proper use, programmable thermostats can save you about $180 a year in energy costs.

· Check your HVAC system's air filter every month. If the filter looks dirty, change it, but change the filter at least every three months. A dirty filter will slow air flow and make the system work harder to keep you cool, wasting energy.

· Run your ceiling fan to create a cool breeze. If you raise your thermostat by only two degrees and use your ceiling fan, you can lower cooling costs by up to 14 percent. Remember that ceiling fans cool you, not the room, so when you leave the room make sure to turn off the fan.

· Pull the curtains and shades closed before you leave your home to keep the sun's rays from overheating the interior of your home. If you can, move container trees and plants in front of sun-exposed windows to serve as shade.
