A Federal Transit Administration (FTA) study released today estimates the cost of bringing the nation's rail and bus transit systems into a state of good repair at $77.7 billion. In addition, a yearly average of $14.4 billion would be required to maintain the systems. FTA's National State of Good Repair Assessment Study, requested by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood as a follow-up to the 2009 Rail Modernization Study report to Congress, provides a comprehensive analysis of the costs required to bring the nation's rail and bus transit systems into good operating order. The 2010 study released today is based on data provided by 36 additional rail and bus operators in both rural and urban areas. "Transit remains one of the safest forms of transportation, but this report shows the clear need to reinvest in our bus, subway and light rail systems," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "As a nation, we must lead when it comes to infrastructure development and commit ourselves to rebuilding America."
The California Energy Commission approved 11 awards that leverage almost $20 million in state funding with $9.3 million in federal stimulus money and $39 million in private funds. These projects will demonstrate the possibilities for cutting-edge natural gas-powered, hybrid, and electric trucks and buses to reduce petroleum use, cut pollution and provide jobs. "California's investment in alternative fuels and technology will leverage nearly two-and-a-half times as much money for an important part of our transportation sector," said Energy Commissioner Anthony Eggert. "While electric and hybrid cars get much of the media attention, advances in large, heavy-duty trucks and buses can replace millions of gallons of petroleum each year."
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that $775 million in federal funds is being made available to the nation's transit providers to upgrade their bus systems. "The FTA is addressing the challenge of bringing our nation's transit systems into a state of good repair head-on," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "These funds will get us started, but we still have a long way to go." Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff on Sunday made the announcement Sunday in an address during the general session of the American Public Transportation Association's Bus and Paratransit Conference in Cleveland, Ohio. "Well maintained, clean and reliable buses make a world of difference to the millions of Americans who use transit every day," Administrator Rogoff said. "The Obama Administration is making these funds available to ensure that financially strapped transit providers can keep buses rolling and serving the public during these difficult economic times."
