On Monday, 12 April 2010, the Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), Tineke Huizinga, representing the national government, and the Chairman of the Association of Water Boards, Peter Glas, representing the Water Boards, sign a climate agreement, marking a key step towards meeting the Netherlands' climate targets. This approach enables the Water Boards to make a contribution to the fight against climate change. For example, they will achieve energy savings averaging 2% per year and aim to gradually increase its share of renewable energy generated by 40% by 2020. As part of this process, Minister Huizinga will be on hand to launch an energy‑neutral purification plant, which will produce energy and heat from organic material. It will generate sustainable biogas to meet the energy needs of some 3,900 households.
