Ad van Wijk, co-founder and chairman of the board of Econcern, has been named Top Executive of the Year 2008. He received the award from the Managers Netwerk Nederland (Managers Network of the Netherlands) at a ceremony to mark National Management Day. The jury recognised Van Wijk for his personal contribution to the spectacular growth of the company. Econcern, a leading provider of sustainable energy solutions, is one of the fastest growing companies in Europe. Between 2005 and 2007 the company saw an 889 per cent increase in turnover. Originally a physicist by profession, Ad van Wijk's strength as a visionary entrepreneur, rather than solely a manager, was recognised by the jury. Van Wijk commented: "This award will continue to raise Econcern's profile, providing a platform for further growth and the realisation of our mission: a sustainable energy supply for everyone. I feel highly honoured to have been nominated as top executive by a jury of my peers."

With regard to the energy crisis, Van Wijk stated that there is no such thing: worldwide energy efficiency amounts to two per cent. 98 per cent of our energy is wasted during extraction, through transport, during transformation, and mainly in consumption. We have vast energy supplies at our disposal‚ the sun alone supplies more energy in an hour than we can use globally in a year.

The credit crisis, on the other hand, is very real indeed. The high-growth sector of sustainable energy makes it possible for companies to realise profits and operate sustainably at the same time. Now is a better time than ever for this sector to help economies weather the credit crunch and emerge from it even stronger. However, the current hard squeeze on bank loans is also hitting this sector. Governments can lend assistance here by taking positive action, for example by providing guarantees for sustainable energy project finance. Van Wijk has already been awarded Entrepreneur of the Year (public award, 2002) and Master Entrepreneur of the Year (2007). In addition, he won the Award for Private Equity in 2007. Van Wijk succeeds Sjoerd van Keulen, CEO of SNS Reaal, who was named Top Executive of the Year 2007.
