United Kingdom asks public's opinion on nuclear energy sites

The public in the United Kingdom are being asked to voice their opinions on potential sites for new nuclear power stations. If you are interested in commenting on one of the 11 sites suggested you have a month to do so before the nuclear planning consultation later this year. The Department of Energy and Climate Change has published a list of 11 potential sites for new nuclear power stations. All sites have been vetted to make sure they are realistic sites for a nuclear power station, they could be up and running by 2025 and that the nominator has raised public awareness of their intention to nominate.

The eleven sites nominated for new nuclear power stations are: Hartlepool, Heysham, Dungeness, Sellafield, Kirksanton, Braystones, Wylfa Peninsula, Oldbury, Hinkley Point.

Following the one month public comment period, views from the public will be used alongside the advice of regulators and other specialists. Sites which are judged to be potentially suitable will be included in the draft National Policy Statement on nuclear power which will be published later this year for public consultation.

Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Department of energy and climate change, said: "This is another important step towards a new generation of nuclear power stations. I want to listen to what people have to say about these nominations and I encourage people to log-on to our website, read the information and let us have their comments."
